Best water filter for apartment living: countertop RO, dispensers and pitchers for renters

Best water filter for apartment living: the short answer

The best water filter for an apartment is one that needs no change to the plumbing: a countertop reverse osmosis (RO) system, a countertop dispenser or a pitcher. Waterdrop's K19-SFK countertop RO system is $349.00 and needs no installation, and AquaTru's Carafe is $375.00 with a 30 Day Money Back Guarantee. Every price is one-time, as read on October 14, 2026.

A lease may not allow anything that joins the cold water line, so a countertop RO system, a dispenser or a pitcher comes first. In a small kitchen, counter size decides: Waterdrop prints 15.5 by 9.2 by 17.5 inches for the K19-SFK and 15.9 by 8.2 by 15.7 inches for the A2.

Countertop reverse osmosis: Waterdrop K19-SFK and AquaTru Carafe

The K19-SFK is a countertop RO system: fill the 170 oz tank, plug it in and use it, with no drilling, per Waterdrop. It is rated at 75 gallons per day (GPD, a daily membrane figure) with a 3:1 pure-to-drain ratio. Waterdrop's page says it suits renters and prints NSF/ANSI 58, and IAPMO R&T's directory lists the K19-SFK under 58 with TDS as its reduction claim.

AquaTru's Carafe is $375.00, and iSpring's RCD100 is a countertop RO system with UV at $419.99. Waterdrop's return is 30 days with the buyer paying return shipping unless the return is for a quality issue. Pick the K19-SFK for the lowest countertop RO price here and AquaTru for its guarantee; Waterdrop vs AquaTru compares the makers.

Hot and cold countertop dispensers: Waterdrop A2 and Brita Ultramax

Waterdrop's A2 is an RO hot and cold dispenser at $499.00 that Waterdrop says fits any countertop, with a 40 oz pitcher and a 59 to 203°F range. It is rated 100 GPD, and its spec block says electricity is required. Waterdrop's page lists the A2 under NSF/ANSI 372 only for lead-free materials, so its reduction claims are Waterdrop's own.

Brita's Ultramax dispenser with an Elite filter is $49.99 and holds 27 cups; Brita sells no RO system. Pick the A2 for hot water from a countertop RO unit and the Ultramax for the lowest price.

A pitcher with no setup: ZeroWater 22 Cup

ZeroWater's 22 Cup Ready-Read Pitcher with 2 filters is $62.98. ZeroWater's page says opened or used items are not eligible for return under its standard policy, and new, unopened items bought on its site can be returned within 45 days. Pick a pitcher when the lease, the counter or the budget rules out a countertop RO unit; Brita alternatives compares pitchers.

If the lease allows a cold-line connection

Waterdrop's Direct Connect filters join the cold line and the original faucet, at 10 to 125 psi. That is a plumbing connection, so ask the landlord first. Where it is allowed, the WD-10UA is $58.99. Best home water filtration systems shows how it compares with the other formats.
